![]() "Courts would not be afraid to recognize this as reason to strike down acts pretending to martial law authority," Olson said, just as they haven't been afraid to smack down specious election challenges. The courts are open now, which means any declaration of martial law - including in the six states Flynn targeted - would be illegal. There must be a state of invasion or insurrection such that ground is actually contested, and resort to conventional civil courts and authority must have collapsed." Absent those conditions, the court said in Milligan, martial law is "a gross usurpation of power," and in fact "can never exist where the courts are open." It means "the president cannot simply declare martial law at his whim. This ruling is "key" to understanding the president's martial law powers today, Olson said. But in Ex parte Milligan(1866), the Supreme Court ruled Lincoln had overstepped his legitimate bounds. That single occasion was President Abraham Lincoln's suspension of habeas corpus rights to suppress dissent during the Civil War. (Most instances on the list were limited to a single city or county and often concerned local labor disputes or rioting.) Under martial law, he summarized, "civil liberties are suspended," so "military commanders can issue orders to civilians" as well as "arrest and mete out punishment based on tactical needs of war rather than the civilian law on the books." Martial law has been declared 68 times in the United States, per a recent tally by the Brennan Center for Justice, and only on one occasion has it happened on a national scale. There are really two topics at issue here, Olson told me: martial law and the Insurrection Act of 1807. Moreover, Trump's other advisers in the Friday meeting reportedly opposed the plan in forceful terms, and a statement from Army leadership the same day made clear the military would take no role "in determining the outcome of an American election." ![]() streets, scooping up voting machines and tossing anyone who objects before a military tribunal. The president reportedly expressed interest in Flynn's idea.Ĭould this actually happen? Though it may simply be normalcy bias at work, I can't really imagine federal troops marching through U.S. ![]() And then there's Trump himself, who met with Flynn and other allies in the Oval Office this past Friday. Lin Wood, an attorney who sued to prevent the certification of the Georgia presidential election results, tweeted Saturday that "atriots are praying" Trump will "impose martial law in disputed states." Commenters at TheDonald.win, an online forum for supporters of the president, thrilled at the idea of a "mostly peaceful martial law declaration" but wondered, absurdly, whether it would accommodate their teenagers' travel home from college or their wives' scheduled c-sections. Flynn isn't alone in his open enthusiasm for precisely the military junta scenario the president's supporters have spent four years dismissing as a fever dream of Trump Derangement Syndrome. ![]()

Essential Calculus for Beginners: A Comprehensive Guide Introduction ![]() ![]() ![]() It, essentially, boils down to a comedy bit with Jim and Arthur, the android bartender. But, really, the fact of the matter is that there's not much resistance from Jim's part to do this. This is, of course, what you see, as I'm certain much more time passed for Jim in his world. Because Jim only debates this for, say, about five minutes. As an aside, by the time he does this, Jim has been on his own for a year and three weeks. He comes to fall for Aurora's personality and her sense of humor and, basically, he decides to take matters into his own hands and purposely cause Aurora's pod to malfunction so she, much like him, is woken up almost 90 years prior to their arrival. ![]() This only holds him over for so long and, long story short, he looks at the flight manifest and finds Aurora's interview for why she's going to the colony, and why she's choosing to leave behind her friends, family and life. Eventually, he just stops worrying about what he can't control and chooses to, for a short while at least, enjoy the fact that he's on a luxury airship. He attempts to find every possible solution to this problem, from breaking into the cabin where the flight crew is in, to trying to put himself back into hibernation, among many other options. Chris Pratt's character, Jim, wakes up from his hibernation pod 30 years into a trip that's meant to take 120 years. ![]() That's what the question this movie poses, except instead of a deserted island, it's a spaceship traveling to a distant colony planet. And how would you go about this? Would you tell the person that you're responsible for their being on this island? Or would you attempt to keep it a secret for as long as you could, maybe revealing the secret on your deathbed or something. I suppose you don't have the right to make that decision for someone else because, again, they'll spend the rest of their lives on the deserted island because you 'wished' them there. Honestly, that's a very difficult question to ponder. That question is simplified down to this, basically, if you were stuck on a deserted island with no hope of getting out of it, beyond a shadow of a doubt, would you, if you had the choice, bring someone along with you to ease the loneliness, knowing that you're gonna doom them to live out the rest of their lives on a deserted island with just you. This movie poses a legitimately interesting question. Rating: PG-13 (Nudity|Action/Peril|Sexuality) With the lives of 5,000 sleeping passengers at stake, only Jim and Aurora can save them all. As Jim and Aurora face living the rest of their lives on board, with every luxury they could ever ask for, they begin to fall for each other, unable to deny their intense attraction until they discover the ship is in grave danger. On a routine journey through space to a new home, two passengers, sleeping in suspended animation, are awakened 90 years too early when their ship malfunctions. ![]() ![]() ![]() "Who You'd Be Today" from Kenny Chesney."Lullaby (Goodnight, My Angel" from Billy Joel. Here are some beautiful modern funeral songs for a child: These songs sensitively explore that subject matter. ![]() The prospect of seeing a young person die before they’ve had the chance to live is difficult. He always knew that I would sin and make bad choices, and in spite of that, he is committed to me. He doesn’t look at my chronic propensity to sin and wonder if and why he still loves me. It’s not like he signed up to be with me and then felt let down by who I really am. Immediately I was struck by the fact that God is never disillusioned with me. According to Merriam-Webster it means: the condition of being disenchanted the condition of being dissatisfied or defeated in expectation or hope. When I was reading something the other day, the word “disillusioned” jumped off the page at me. God knew that his love for me would never give out. Think about how much you use your hands and how often you would see or “notice” ink on your hand. But God loves me enough to put my name on his hand. With the on-again-off-again of romantic relationships, it seems that “conventional wisdom” has led people not to put the name of a spouse or significant other on their body, because God forbid the relationship doesn’t last, then what? Tattoos are forever. People have learned that tattoos are forever, (or at least super difficult, expensive, and painful to remove). In spite of the fact that in today’s culture tattoos are “all the norm,” from the tattoos I’ve seen, not many people have a name on their body except maybe of their child. I’m not really sure why but I have always found Isaiah 49:16 to be very special: “Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands…” (ESV) or the Living Bible puts it this way: “I have tattooed your name upon my palm…” When I think of that verse, I realize that God is fully and completely forever committed to me. Now, why do I share this? Am I trying to get you to consider a tattoo or to think of them differently? No, I share this because tattoos remind me of something I love about God. For me, it is an oath that I want to be seen as one who walks with Jesus and that I long to be a “fisher of men.” It is also a testimony to the Lord and my commitment to follow him. The other thing I love about my tattoo is that when my arms are held out wide, my tattoo looks like the cancer ribbon but if I hold my arm up as in a wave, it looks like a Christian fish. ![]() I am beyond thankful for her life and the bond we shared. (Like I could ever forget my baby sister!) It’s very special to me, because whenever this now-part-of–me ink catches my eye-I do think of her. Second, she knew it would be a forever memorial to her life. First, it was out of character for me (but something she had already done.) I think it felt validating to her that her sister whose life had looked so different than hers, would join her in that. She cried and cried when she saw it for two reasons. I got this tattoo as a gift for my sister before she died. This purple ribbon symbolizes “all cancers” (as opposed to pink for breast cancer, etc.), and it symbolizes the breast/lung/brain cancer that killed my sister. It was a small cancer ribbon on the inside of my right wrist. I got a tattoo in the spring of 2017 at the ripe old age of…well…let’s just say I was already a grandmother. You better be sure that the one you get is going to have lasting meaning and value…or at least will be something that you will not regret. In fact, they still don’t have any ink today. I will hold the envelope for a year, and then if you can tell me what’s on the paper and still want that tattoo a year from now, we will let you get it.” I’m not fully sure what I would have done if they had taken me up on the offer, but I can tell you that they changed their minds many times over and over. My husband and I would say: “Draw it on a piece of paper and put it in an envelope. They would often ask if they could get one. They would even draw out the artwork for what they wanted it to look like. Talk about regret! When my boys were in high school, they desperately wanted a tattoo. ![]() Tattoos are forever! How many times have you met someone who has one that they now regret? I once knew a girl who had a picture of a dog in a business suit riding on a bicycle on her back. ![]() ![]() I do wish they'd change the font though, as it's too close to comic sans for comfort. I don't expect too much to change between this beta and the release version, other than the removal of the current wall which blocks progress past a certain number of jumps, so you can safely jump aboard now. This is Gravity but without the chain of astonishing coincidences this is Gravity in which everything usually goes as wrong as it supposed to, yet somehow the astronaut remains calm, even lyrical, throughout. I feel comfortable in Out There, and while I'd love a more forgiving version in order that I'd get to feel the joy of whatever victory it ultimately offers, and to encounter some of the increasingly strange sights which lie further along the journey, it would also rob it of meaning. There's little to do, really - click this system or that system, click to mine this planet or probe that one's atmosphere - so it can very much be played with mental brakes off. I guess I enjoy having this challenge that I might one day beat, but which doesn't require practice or reflex or inviolable play strategies or anything else that my stubborn mind won't make time for. It's been a comfort game for almost a year, and is becoming so all over again now it's on my monitor rather than just a squinty phone screen, and yet the last thing Out There does is comfort for me. But I always think "well, if I'd jumped to this system instead of that system everything would be A-OK now." So I try again. OK, maybe sometimes I'm too reckless on jump, or too greedy at trying to mine a planet of all resources, but it's not my fault that four systems in a row lacked planets which held fuel, or that a sudden asteroid field tore off half my hull. Out There lulls me into a false sense of security, but also when everything does go to hell it always makes me feel as though it was my fault. It seems as though it should be nice, with its pretty planets and languid text, its aliens who never show aggression (instead, they slowly teach you words of a pan-galactic language which, when enough of it is understood, will help you make the 'right' decision in future dialogue options - this is a particularly lovely feature) and the way it will suddenly gift me something miraculous just at the point when I'd decided it was too mean-spirited to continue with. It's so laid back and even hopeful in its presentation and its writing that I always seem to forget quite how cruel it is. I have never beaten it, despite having put in hours across phone and PC versions, and suspect I never will. In my case, this only pushes me harder to try and 'beat' it. I might even go so far as to say it's a fucking bastard. The obvious, and fair criticism of Out There is that it's dependent on random chance, and that the cards are so stacked in the house's favour that it's almost not worth sitting at the table. you will play it again and again, despite repeatedly vowing that you'll never play it again because it treats you so mean. This is a short game of perma-death - i.e. This means the good stuff remains - a jump into the unknown, replete with gasps of hope when you stumble across a fuel-rich body or unexpectedly find an abandoned ship with maxed-out resources and an engine room full of new tech orbiting a lone star, but more often long exhalations of frustration as it all goes wrong for reasons usually beyond your control (and usually relating to running out of fuel). The planets are more 3D and particle effecty, there's more flavour text and art, and mouse controls are all present and correct, but otherwise Out There Omega Edition is Out There, made suitable for a bigger screen. It's a slightly prettified, slightly expanded edition of the mobile game, in other words. ![]() I've been playing said beta for the last few days, and while annoyingly it has a built-in cut-off point, there's enough there to tell you that they've got it right. A public beta of that Ω Edition arrives today, with a full release planned for early Spring. ![]() Out There has been out on mobile thingies for almost a year, with a PC version teased last Summer. But hey, surely being cast adrift in endless, unknown space with no idea what awaits you on the other end of your next lightspeed jump would be pretty unfair, right? Out There Cleaves a little closer to Choose Your Own Adventure than FTL did, in that it is almost entirely based on chance rather than requiring any particular strategic nous from the player. Don't worry about weapons, don't worry about crew members: just don't die. As a lone, lost starpilot, jump from system to system, simply trying to stay alive and trying to gather replacement resources as the journey steadily eats away your fuel, oxygen and hull integrity. Out There is a pacifistic take on FTL, yet arguably even more brutal. ![]() ![]() These sustainable products can perform efficiently even after multiple uses and can withstand all types of harsh us.
